ARMOUR, JOHN L., 89

ARMOUR, JOHN L., 89, of North Wildwood, NJ, died on Monday, May 1, 2017 at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center – City Division. Born in Philadelphia, PA to the late John and Caroline Baines Armour, he moved here in 1942 from Philadelphia and left in 1946 to join the Navy during World War II and returned in 1966 when he retired as a Chief Petty Officer. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cape May Court House.
A 1946 graduate of Wheaton College Academy, Wheaton, IL, Mr. Armour was stationed at the Naval Hospital in Annapolis, MD and served on the USS Tutuila ARG4 and USS Galveston CLG3 and at Station Hospital Port Lyautey, Morocco, Navy Recruiting in Philadelphia, Plank Owner of USS Little Rock, and District Medical Officer for the 4th Naval District in Philadelphia.
In 1966 Mr. Armour began working for Sturdy Savings Bank. He was promoted to levels of administration and was appointed President and CEO in 1977. He retired from Sturdy Savings Bank as President and CEO in June 1987. He lived in Virginia from 1991 until his return to Cape May County in 1997. He was a member and past president of Rio Grande Lions Club; past president of Lower Township Regional High School Board of Education; former member of the Cape May Court House Kiwanis Club and VFW of North Wildwood; and a life member of the Fleet Reserve Association and DAV.
Mr. Armour enjoyed building miniature doll house furniture and playing cribbage. In the church, he sang in the choir and served on the Board of Trustees and as Library Volunteer.
Mr. Armour is survived by his wife, Susan (nee Slamb) Armour; his daught ers, Deborah Smith (Robert), Sharon Agin, and Bonnie Moretto (Lou); his step children, Cassandra Germann (Ken), Nancy E. Johnson, Debbie S. Shephard; Colin B. Taylor (Wendy), and Kristin M. Carson (Ed); his sister, Olive Jean Twilley; his brother, Thomas James Armour (Karen); his 19 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren; his sisters in law, Nancy Armour, Nancy Armour, and Sheryl Dickinson; and his brother in law, Raymond A. Slamb. He was preceded in death by his son in law, Rich Agin; and his siblings, Ida May Connelly, Donald W. Armour, and Franklin B. Armour.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 101 South Main Street, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210; where visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery.
