Obituary

ANDERSON, ARTHUR PEARLY, was

ANDERSON, ARTHUR PEARLY, was born on 5 November 1929 in Urbana, Virginia, the tenth of twelve children of the late Charles Hunter and Emma Russ Anderson. The family lived in a house, built by his father, on a hill overlooking the Rappahannock River. Arthur spent his boyhood summers in Stone Harbor visiting his mother’s sister, Janie Taliafarro.
In 1951, Arthur enlisted in the Army and served two years in Germany during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and returned to Stone Harbor. Arthur and Catherine Hall married in 1954, a union that would last 48 years, until Catherine’s death in 2002. This marriage produced their first child, Sharon Marie, born in 1955, their second, Audrey Lynn, born in 1958.
Arthur and Catherine built their home on 81st where they would raise their daughters. Within this small seaside community and inspired by his family’s hard-work ethic, Arthur was employed by the Stone Harbor Lumber Company and then the Stone Harbor Police Department. During his 23-year service to the Department, Arthur achieved the rank of Sergeant. What’s more, Arthur pursued self-employment opportunities which included landscaping, home security, bartending, and renovating and renting residential properties. One of his oft-repeated goals was to ensure a nurturing and fun home for his daughters and their friends.
Arthur was an avid reader. He and Catherine traveled extensively, a pastime cultivated by Arthur’s curiosity about the destinations he had read about; their journeys took them to six of the seven continents. Arthur’s parents provided a spiritual foundation for him and his siblings. He enjoyed listening to The Male Tones’ of First Baptist Church in Whitesboro and to the sacred music at Morris Hall’s Chapel.
More importantly, Arthur adored his family, deeply and unconditionally. He was beloved in Stone Harbor and at his final home, Morris Hall. Arthur personified a celebration of life, the embracing of others, and perseverance.
Arthur is survived by his daughters, Sharon Anderson Lewis, Ph.D. and her husband, Brian K. Lewis, of Bowie, Maryland and Audrey Lynn Anderson, Esq., and her husband, James E. Jones, Jr., of Pennington, New Jersey; a brother, Raymond Anderson of Cape May Court House, New Jersey; three sisters-in-law, Doris Hall Reddick and Rose Ann Hudgins, Blanch Anderson; a host of nieces and nephews; and friends.
Funeral services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Morris Hall Foundation, One Bishops’ Drive, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.
