North Wildwood has announced its beach protection plans for the 2009 summer season.
“The summer season kicks off early this year with Memorial Day Weekend starting on Friday, May 22, and we’ll be ready”, said North Wildwood Beach Patrol Captain Tony Cavalier.
“The city will provide guarded beaches for the holiday weekend, and we’re hoping for warm, sunny weather so our visitors head to the beach.”
Cavalier says the city will provide guarded beaches in North Wildwood Saturday through Monday, May 23-25 for the Memorial Day Weekend. City beaches will again be guarded the following weekend, May 30-31.
Then, starting June 6, North Wildwood will provide full-time lifeguard service on the city beaches for the remainder of the summer.
“All of the tourism trends and numbers indicate that we’ll have another terrific tourism season,” said North Wildwood Mayor Bill Henfey. “North Wildwood’s beaches were ranked as one of the top five beaches in the entire state in 2008, and soon they will be even better.
“Our beaches will be part of a major beach fill project taking place in Cape May County throughout 2009. We’ll have wider beaches that will provide recreational space, and more importantly protection in the event of a major coastal storm.”
The North Wildwood Beach Patrol will be conducting its rookie lifeguard test on May 30 at the Crest Pool, 11 a.m.
The beach patrol will also conduct its Junior Lifeguard Program from June 30-July 23. Classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 9-11 a.m. for children in grades four through nine. There is a $25 fee for the program.
North Wildwood will also continue to host two major lifeguard events in 2009.
On July 17 the Beschen-Callahan Memorial Lifeguard Race will be held at 6 pm. on the beach at 15th St.
Beach patrols from North Wildwood, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, Stone Harbor, Avalon, Sea Isle City, and Upper Township are expected to compete for the championship.
The city will host the “Around the Island Row” later in the summer, featuring all 15 South Jersey beach patrol teams taking part in the competition.
