In September, New Jersey “Run for the Fallen,” a four day, 190+ mile memorial run and tradition since 2009, made its way up the New Jersey coastline to honor fallen service men and women.
The evening before the run on Wednesday, Sept. 21, participants and supporters gathered at a flag lowering ceremony at Sunset Beach to remember the lives of New Jersey’s most recent war dead.
The following day on Thursday, Sept. 22, the run began bright and early as runners started their journey at the Cape May Lighthouse and made their way up to Ocean City. The run continued on Friday, Sept. 23 from Somers Point to Long Beach Island, and on Saturday, Sept. 24 from Long Beach Island to Toms River/Brick area. From there, runners traveled to the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial in Holmdel, Monmouth County where a closing ceremony was held, completing the run.
To honor those service members from New Jersey who laid down their lives for our country, the team stopped at each mile along the route, visiting hero markers for those New Jersey residents killed in battle and creating a memorial trail throughout the state. The core running team presented an American flag and a personal biographical card at each hero marker to the waiting family members, friends and comrades. Hence the run’s motto, “One mile. One flag. One hero.” Many of those family members and friends chose to join the core running team for their soldier’s mile.
