New Study Suggests Regular Exercise Cuts Older Women’s Breast Cancer Risk

By Sponsored Content

Older women intent on keeping breast cancer at bay may want to start and maintain a regular exercise regimen, a new study shows.
In the study, a team led by Agnes Fournier at the Institut Gustave Roussy in Villejuif, France, tracked more than 59,000 postmenopausal women in France who were followed for an average of 8.5 years. During that time, more than 2,100 of the women were diagnosed with primary invasive breast cancer.
Women who in the previous four years had done regular exercise equivalent to at least four hours of walking or cycling per week were 10 percent less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than those who did less exercise.
The breast cancer-reducing impact of regular exercise was independent of weight, body fat, waist circumference and exercise levels from five to nine years earlier, according to the study published Aug. 11 in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
However, because the effect quickly diminished after exercise ceased, “postmenopausal women who exercise should be encouraged to continue,” Fournier added. “It seems that adding exercise to one’s routine improves health and decreases cancer risk,” she concluded.
Miracles Fitness of Rio Grande provides Cape May County women looking to pursue such an exercise routine with a comfortable and user-friendly environment in which to do so. Miracles was originally founded by Dottie Drake when she was at the age of 47 after she discovered the benefits of an exercise regimen and thus turned her life around. Dottie quickly became a champion of older adult activity and fitness and was determined to provide a non-intimidating gym environment to the deconditioned population.
Miracles continues in this tradition today, providing user-friendly cardio and strength machines and featuring a knowledgeable staff who is always ready and willing to provide instructions and advice. Miracles is also an authorized provider of both the Silver Sneakers and Silver & Fit programs in Cape May County. These energizing programs help older adults take greater control of their health by encouraging physical activity. Many health plans around the country offer these programs to eligible participants and provide a fitness center membership to any participating location across the country.
Originally founded in hopes to empower the older community, Miracles now reaches far beyond this goal, offering something for all ages and fitness levels including youth fitness, sports performance, weight loss/fat loss, personal training, group coaching and physical therapy. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Miracles is now offering a free training session and health assessment to any breast cancer survivor during October. Call (609) 886-7070 for more information or to schedule your session today.
