COURT HOUSE – How often do parents hear the plaintive refrain, “Can I have a pony?” While the Cape May County 4-H Youth Development Program cannot purchase a pony for your little loved one, we can offer the next best thing…the opportunity to learn about and interact with horses in our brand new 4-H horseless-horse club.
4-H young alumni and club leaders Amanda and Melissa Burnell welcome youth who love horses but don’t have their own to ride to join their horseless-horse Leather & Lace 4-H Club. Leather & Lace will meet the 2nd & 4th Sundays at 3:00 p.m. at the Lockwood 4-H Youth Center right on the 4-H Fairgrounds. While club members will have some access to horses, there will be no riding. Emphasis will be placed on discovering the wonderful world of horses. The club is open to youth in the 4th grades through one year out of high school.
Club Leader Amanda Burnell hopes club members will want to put their new knowledge to the test. “We will be forming a team from our club to compete in the New Jersey 4-H program’s three Horse Science contests held each year: Horse Bowl, Hippology and Horse Judging,“ she explains. “These contests are fun and exciting and offer our youth members the chance to meet 4-H kids from all over New Jersey.”
4-H Program Associate Linda Horner, who coordinates the county 4-H equine program, is pleased to welcome new youth who have a love of horses. “Interaction with animals such as the horse is an outstanding way to reach 4-H youth development program goals of learning life skills, leadership and citizenship. We are grateful for dedicated volunteers like Amanda and Melissa who give of their time and expertise to improve the lives of our county’s youth.” Horner continues, “of course we always welcome new volunteers who have time and expertise to share with youth. Volunteering doesn’t take much time and hours are completely flexible,” she adds.
The Lockwood 4-H Youth Center is located at 355 Court House-S. Dennis Rd. in Cape May Court House.
