WILDWOOD – Naval Air Station Wildwood (NASW) Aviation Museum is proud to announce its 2011 Calendar of Events. A new event for 2011, American Pride Day will be filled with family-friendly activities taking place throughout the day. The 2011 Free Historic Lecture Series is scheduled for every Tuesday in June; lectures will begin at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a short Q&A session. Closing out the summer season, NASW will host the 15th Annual AirFest event. NAS Wildwood is delighted to offer this exciting schedule of events and speakers:
June 4th American Pride Day. An event to honor aviators, astronauts, veterans and celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation! Event will include an F-18 fly-in, live bands, NASA astronaut sharing experiences, the “American Pride Camaro,” and much more!
Free Historic Lecture Series, every Tuesday in June @ 7:00 p.m.
June 7th Captain William Kelly, Commanding Officer US Coast Guard Training Center Cape May. Capt. Kelly’s lecture will be followed by the grand opening of NASW’s new Coast Guard exhibit.
June 23rd Captain Robert J. Moriarty, youngest Naval aviator in Vietnam and holder of 14 international aviation records. Capt. Moriarty flew over 800 combat missions, 700 of which were in an OE-2 Birddog, one of the aircraft on display at NASW.
June 21st Laurie Gaulke, actress & storyteller specializing in creating historical portrayals of real people with real stories to tell. Ms. Gaulke will perform “Wild About Harriet,” the story of an American journalist who became the first woman pilot ever to fly a plane solo across the English Channel.
June 28th Don Slutzky, a Korean War Veteran who worked as a civilian contractor on US Texas Tower #4. This radar tower off Barnegat Inlet was meant to give early warning of Soviet attacks, and tragically collapsed in January of 1961.
Sept. 2nd – 5th NASW’s 15th Annual AirFest. NASW will partner with The Collings Foundation for this Labor Day Weekend event! Featuring WWII aircraft: B-24 Liberator, B-17 Flying Fortress, B-25 Mitchell, P-51 Mustang, other “fly-in” aircraft, vendors, exhibitors, music, food and much more! NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum boasts over 26 aircraft displays as well as exhibits of military memorabilia, engines, photographs, interactive activities and more. Hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. Don’t forget bring your camera!
Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is located in Historic Hangar No. 1 at the Cape May Airport, New Jersey. Cape May Airport was formerly Naval Air Station Wildwood, which served as a World War II dive-bomber training center. The museum is dedicated to the 42 airmen who perished while training at Naval Air Station Wildwood between 1943 and 1945.
