COURT HOUSE – Kay Aspell, managing director of the Performing Arts Center of Middle Township, is seeking volunteers to join her in a historic event.
New Jersey, which is celebrating its 350th anniversary this year, will be hosting the national Special Olympics Games in the Princeton area from June 14 to 21. Some 3,500 athletes from coast to coast will be participating and 10,000 volunteers will be needed to support the special Olympics teams games and individual competitions.
Sponsors are predicting it will be “‘an event bigger than the Super Bowl.”
The Middle Township PAC has been honored by being the only South Jersey site selected as a training grounds for the volunteers. A team of trainers will appear at The PAC March 15, to orient the volunteers and work with them. Other training will be done at sites throughout the state from Hackettstown to Princeton.
Aspell,a former school teacher who has volunteered her services, said there are opportunities for volunteerism in many categories ranging from medicine to security, photographers and various types of attendants.
“This promises to be an inspirational event, not only for those who compete but for those who volunteer,” said Aspell.
