Mibsters from Maryland and Pennsylvania Come Out on Top at the 86th Annual National Marbles Tournament in the Wildwoods
14-year-old Ricky Brode and 13-year-old Whitney Lapic are the champions at this year’s National Marbles Tournament
The Wildwoods, NJ – June 30, 2009 – The 86th Annual National Marbles Tournament concluded on Thursday, June 25, with two special youngsters emerging victorious in this year’s event. Mibsters Ricky Brode of Cumberland, Maryland and Whitney Lapic of Shillington, Pennsylvania were the boy and girl winners of $2,000 scholarships for higher education and the king and queen of this year’s tournament.
As part of the tournament’s rich history of tradition, 14-year-old Ricky gave his co-victor, 13-year-old Whitney, a congratulatory kiss on the cheek; a tradition most of the winners don’t seem to like, but a tradition nonetheless.
Whitney Lapic and her mother, Debra Stanley-Lapic, are the first multigenerational winners in the history of the 86-year-old event. Whitney’s mother, Debra, was the female champion of the tournament in 1973.
This year’s National Marbles Tournament, held on the beach in the Wildwoods, was a huge success, attracting over forty mibsters from across the country to compete and awarding over $4,000 in prizes and scholarships to the winners and participants.
