MARTIN LUTHER KING CELEBRATION

Entertainment and a soul food dinner will be featured in this Community’s annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. set for 1 p.m., Sun., Jan. 17 at the Hughes Performing Arts Center, Ocean City High School, 6th St. and Atlantic Ave.
The dinner will follow the program in the High School Cafeteria. It will be prepared by the women of the Shiloh Baptist Church under the direction of Portia Thompson and Mary Miles.
Rev. Gregory Johnson will recite the inspirational “I have A Dream Speech” and the Rev. Darnell Wise of the Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church of Vineland will give the invocation. The Mt. Pisgah Praise Dance Team will perform and Ocean City school students will participate.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Achievement Award will be presented to Mary Canty, Angela Graham, Brandon Grainger, Kim McFarland and Winnie Piriano .
The dinner menu will include fried chicken, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, candied sweets and corn bread. Reservations are not necessary. The dinner is free but donations will be accepted.
Ocean City was the first community in Cape May County to initiate a birthday celebration for the renowned civil rights leader. It was organized and directed by the late Rozelia Cobb, a teacher in the Ocean City School system.
