MARMORA – Jan. 14, 2016, the Upper Township Wellness Center celebrated the 99th birthday of one of their dearest friends; Elsie Shearer. Elsie was born Elsie Conrad in Philadelphia Jan. 14, 1917, the same year the Girl Scouts started selling cookies, but soon moved to Oaklyn, New Jersey where she grew up. Elsie married Lewis Shearer and lived in Ocean City for most of her adult life.
Playing the piano since she was a little girl, Elsie is the organist at the Trinity United Methodist Church, and still entertains her friends at the Upper Township Wellness Center. Elsie currently lives in Marmora, where she moved after hurricane Sandy destroyed her home in Ocean City.
Elsie loves going to the Upper Township Wellness Center and said that “This place gives me a reason to get dressed in the morning, the television isn’t a substitution.”
