VILLAS – The Cape May County Library welcomes Joe Alvarez, Certified Rutgers Master Gardner, as he presents “Beach Plums: Rubies of the Dunes.” The lecture will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, August 22nd at the Lower Township Branch of the library located at 2600 Bayshore Road, Villas.
Come and learn the history, the wonder and the latest up to date research of the “Official Fruit of Cape May County”. Along with current research through Rutgers State University of New Jersey, Cornell University and the United States Department of Agriculture/Natural Resource Conservation Service Plant Material Center, Cape May County, the beach plum has been used for everything from edible fruit to sustainable agriculture in addition to maintaining dune restoration and preservation.
Following the lecture, there will be a guided tour of the Higbee Beach WMA natural beach plum stands, weather permitting.
