SEA ISLE CITY– Last year, the construction of Sea Isle City’s “Fish Alley” sign was completed, thanks to private and federal funding. The arch-shaped sign, which now spans the entrance to an area that has long-served as the home of Sea Isle’s commercial fishing industry and marina district, welcomes residents and visitors as they enter Park Road from JFK Boulevard. The Fish Alley Committee, the group responsible for the eye-catching sign, is now organizing the construction of a Historic Fish Alley Memorial, which will commemorate the resort’s fishing history.
In support of the memorial, Friends of Tourism, a private non-profit organization that works in cooperation with the City of Sea Isle City, recently sponsored a 50-50 raffle that raised $2500 for the memorial’s construction. The raffle’s winning ticket was drawn by Mayor Leonard Desiderio during Sea Isle’s 2010 Fall Family Festival.
According to Friends of Tourism Chairperson Dave Farina, of Farina & Boeshe Realty, many people were eager to participate in the raffle.
“We are very happy to support this memorial because it commemorates one of Sea Isle City’s earliest industries,” said Farina. “The fishing industry is very much a part of our history and has supplied many jobs to the community over the years. The Friends of Tourism enjoys supporting good causes such as this.”
For Kim Gibson, owner of The Braca Café, and the other members of the Fish Alley Committee, the memorial will serve as a general reminder of Sea Isle’s fishing industry and its rich history.
“We would like to thank the Friends of Tourism for their wonderful donation of $2500, which will be put toward the granite for the memorial,” said Gibson. “We also would like to congratulate Mary Monichetti, the winner of the 50-50 raffle – and I personally would like to thank everyone who has helped with this memorial from the beginning.”
Donations are currently being accepted for the construction of the Historic Fish Alley Memorial. To learn how you can have your business or family name inscribed in granite on the memorial, phone (609) 263-8812 or 263-4271.
