WILDWOOD – Every year during the third week of June, Ringer Stadium on the Wildwood beach is abuzz with mibsters (marble shooters) from all over the country vying for the title of the King and Queen of the National Marbles Tournament.
Jessica Johnson and Alexander Osorio are the winners of the Second annual Cape May County Marbles Tournament held May 12, according to a release.
Both will compete in the National Marbles Tournament to be held June 18-21 in Wildwood.
Johnson, a sixth-grade student at Wildwood Middle School, defeated Keily Sanchez of Rio Grande in the best of seven finals in the girls’ division. Johnson won four games straight, 7-3, 7-4, 7-1, 7-5.
Sanchez was one of the marble champions representing Wildwood in last year’s National Marbles Tournament.
A fourth-grade student at Glenwood Avenue Elementary School, Alexander Osorio defeated opponent Dennis Rodriguez (a fifth grader from the same school), in four straight games, 7-0, 7-3, 7-6, 7-4.
The official game played at the National Marbles Tournament is “Ringer.” In Ringer. There are 13 target marbles placed in the middle of the ring, and in the shape of an ‘X,’ one target marble in the middle with three on each leg spaced three inches apart on center. The object of Ringer is to be the first mibster to shoot out seven marbles.
The Cape May County Marbles Tournament is under the direction of Jerry Sieber and Betty Harshaw.
