COURT HOUSE – Andrea Denise Armstrong, 18 year old 4-H member from Cape May Court House, was selected to represent New Jersey at the 85th National 4-H Conference April 11-16 in Washington, D.C. Andrea is a member of the Communateens, Needle & Thread and Wranglers 4-H Clubs and is active in the teen leadership, community service, sewing and equine 4-H project areas.
Headquartered at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center located in Chevy Chase, Maryland, this conference provides a forum for nearly 400 4-H members, leaders and staff from 50 states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, District of Columbia and Canada. These teens offer a voice in program development for future 4-H direction.
Andrea joined five other 4-H teens from around the state to make up the New Jersey delegation. Candidates were selected amid keen competition following interviews at the School of Environmental and Biological Science, Rutgers University. Conference delegates were chosen based on their leadership and communication skills and strong participation in the 4-H program. “They also share an overall knowledge of the mission of 4-H and a broad understanding of Cooperative Extension,” says Jeannette Rea-Keywood, State 4-H Agent & National 4-H Events Coordinator in the Department of 4-H Youth Development.
According to Armstrong, “National Conference was the height of my 4-H career. The friendships made were more than friendship… we are more than friends…we are family and will always be family. I would not change my 4-H experience for anything in the world. Being a part of National Conference helped me to find myself and discover what I truly want to do with my life.”
The 4-H Youth Development Program is part of Rutgers Cooperative Extension, a unit of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. 4-H educational programs are offered to all youth, grades K-13(one year out of high school), on an age-appropriate basis, without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, atypical hereditary cellular or blood trait, marital status, domestic partnership status, military service, veteran status and any other category protected by law.
