COURT HOUSE – The Thurston Elmer Wood American Legion Post 198, in conjunction with Middle Township Veterans Advisory Board, will host a Veterans Appreciation Breakfast March 12 from 9 to 11 a.m.
The informal event will provide a venue for Post 198 Legionnaires, Auxiliary members, prospective members and their guests to show appreciation for Middle Township veterans while learning about Post 198’s latest news and upcoming plans.
A light breakfast of donuts, Danish, bagels, fruit, coffee, tea and juice will be served. Thurston Elmer Wood American Legion Post 198 is located at Dias Creek Road and Hand Avenue.
“This is a great idea. I hope it can grow and become an important annual event in our community,” Committeeman Timothy Donohue stated in a release.
“I want to thank Veterans Advisory Board Chairwoman Maureen Lozier and all the board members for their ongoing efforts on behalf of our veterans,” he stated.
American Legion’s mission is to support active military personnel as well as veterans and their families in the community. The organization is an advocate of veterans’ affairs such as seeking better active-duty pay and improved housing for active-duty families and ensuring that the Veterans Administratoin’s medical system properly cares for veterans.
American Legion membership is open to those currently on active duty as well as those having served honorably during any of the following war eras:
• Aug. 2, 1990 – present (Gulf War/Global War on Terrorism)
• Dec. 20, 1989 – Jan. 31, 1990 (Panama)
• Aug. 24, 1982 – July 31, 1984 (Lebanon/Grenada)
• Feb. 28, 1961 – May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War)
• June 25, 1950 – Jan. 31, 1955 (Korean War)
• Dec. 7, 1941 – Dec. 31, 1946 (World War II)
• April 6, 1917 – Nov. 11, 1918 (World War I)

Mission of the Middle Township Veterans Advisory Board is to advise Township Committee on programs and initiatives available to improve the quality of life for Middle Township’s veterans. The board shall work to preserve the memory and dignity of all United States veterans worldwide and shall work with other local veteran and military groups to orchestrate local activities and ceremonies throughout the calendar year, particularly Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
“The Veterans Advisory Board works tirelessly on behalf of our veterans and is such a great resource for our community,” said Mayor Michael Clark. “This breakfast is a wonderful opportunity for folks to learn more about the American Legion and the board while showing their appreciation for Middle Township veterans.”
