If you missed the first set of free lectures at Naval Air Station Wildwood (NASW) Aviation Museum, the museum will be hosting a second set of the popular free lecture series, which will begin on Wednesday June 2.
The series will run on four consecutive Wednesdays in July at 7 p.m, and will feature speakers and topics covering all things air and space, from Word War II aviation tactics to astronaut space travel.
The program is funded by a donation from the Napier family in memory of World War II Navy Airman Curtis Napier. He received his gunnery training at NAS Wildwood in a SB2C Helldiver and subsequently was stationed in the Pacific.
Following the war, he returned to Cape May County, became a permanent resident, and was employed locally.
The lecture schedule will feature:
Wednesday, July 2: Dr Ralph Cox, United States Overseas Airline.
Wednesday, July 9: Captain Ron Reit, U.S. Navy: a former Naval Aviator who flew the famous TBM Torpedo Bomber during World War II.
Afterwards, check out the Aviation Museum’s TBM aircraft in its collection.
Wednesday, July 16: Prof. Terry Hart, Air & Space Administration. Currently a professor of mechanical engineering at Lehigh University, Hart will speak about his experiences as a former astronaut and his work at the National Aeronautics & Space Administration.
Wednesday, July 23: Southern Jersey Airways. Do you remember commuter service at the Cape May County Airport?
Presented will be a Southern Jersey Airways lecture and exhibit opening.
NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum is located at historic Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport.
The airport was formerly Naval Air Station Wildwood, which served as a World War II dive-bomber training center.
The museum is dedicated to the 42 airmen who perished while training at Naval Air Station Wildwood between 1943 and 1945.
The museum now boasts over 26 aircraft displays as well as exhibits of military memorabilia, engines and photographs.
Interactive exhibits allow visitors to discover the science of flight and more.
Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. year-round rain or shine.
