Acting Workshop and Showcase
Brighton Beach Memoirs- Scene Study for Adults & Teens (ages 12-19)
Through a series of (3) two-hour workshops, Walnut Street Theatre teaching artist Noah Herman will provide an interactive learning experience for adults and teens. Participants will explore the play “Brighton Beach Memoirs” by Neil Simon through acting exercises, script analysis, and other theatrical techniques and exercises. Comprehension of text, creation of characters, and much more! The final class will culminate in a small showcase with costumes and props- all provided. Sports Author Lecture with John Thorn
John Thorn is the co-author of “The Hidden Game of Baseball” and editor and publisher of “Total Baseball: The Official Encyclopedia of Major League Baseball”. He is also the Official Historian of Major League Baseball, taking office in 2011.
John will be lecturing on “Baseball Outsiders”- who has been included or excluded, when and why, and how baseball continues to shine a beacon of meritocracy for the rest of the nation and the world. It will focus on the Jewish experience, African Americans to Irish Americans, Hispanic Americans, women, and foreign nationals of color.

Writing the Perfect Picture Book
In this interactive writing workshop for adults, Nancy will take the class through the different types of picture books and discuss how each is written, why the author chose a picture book format, and how the book was published (traditionally or self-published, hard copy or digital). Character and plot development and the types of stories editors are seeking will also be discussed. Participants will draft a picture book “dummy” and also learn about writing a professional query and cover letter to catch an editor’s attention. Please note: this is not an illustration class but distinctions among author, author-illustrator, and an illustrator will be covered. Author Lecture with Susan Sparks
The Rev. Susan Sparks will talk about her experiences as the only stand-up comic with a pulpit. She has been a lawyer, a comedian, and is currently the Senior Pastor of the Madison Avenue Baptist Church, the first woman pastor to occupy that pulpit in 160 years. She is also a cancer survivor.
In her work, Rev. Sparks connects the dots between health, humor, and happiness in an original way. Her most recent book is “Laughing Your Way to Grace- Reclaiming the Spiritual Power of Humor”.

This course will provide students a basic understanding of the Italian language and culture. Through listening, reading, speaking and writing, students will acquire basic conversational skills in the Italian language.

Lecture: Celebrating the Jersey Shore with 350 Years of History
Celebrating the Jersey Shore 1764-1955 with author Margaret Buchholz enlightens contemporary shore lovers with fascinating historical perspective. A presentation with readings and historic photographs, etchings and fine-art images will be shown. This program begins with adventure travel in 1764 when the shore (and much of New Jersey) was still a wild frontier. It concludes in 1955 with the opening of the Garden State Parkway, which brought exponentially more visitors – and rapid development- to the Jersey Shore. The lecture is based on two of the author’s books, “Shore Chronicles” and “Josephine, From Washington Working Girl to Fisherman’s Wife”.

Lecture: Tales from an NPR Correspondent- “The Story Behind the Story”
Frank Langfitt, National Public Radio Foreign Correspondent, will give a multi-media presentation on how a foreign correspondent works to get the tough stories in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. He will show photos and audio clips from his stories on NPR. Key stories will include covering war from the front lines in Mogadishu, covering the crushing of the uprising in Bahrain during the Arab Spring, sneaking past police into a Chinese rebel village, and tracking outlaw gold prospectors in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. A Q&A will follow the lecture.

Author Lecture with Lee Child
New York Times bestselling author Lee Child is the author of 18 books, including six #1 bestsellers. He won both the Anthony and Barry awards for Best First Mystery for his debut, Killing Floor, and the Barry and Nero awards for Best Novel for The Enemy. Lee will speak for approximately 45 minutes with a Q&A and book signing to follow. Three titles of his books will be available for sale on the evening of the event, Never Go Back, A Wanted Man, and The Affair.

with Dr. Jerrold Casway
Jerry is a baseball historian and author who will be talking on the legacy of Dick Allen’s career in Philadelphia; the tensions, problems and misunderstandings that undermined his years there. He will be looking at racial attitudes within the franchise, the city and the fans. Allen’s story is more complex than most imagine and is in need of a reassessment.

Insectarium Travel Show
The Insectarium Travel Show program will bring a selection of living insects and other arthropods to the Multipurpose room for an educational and fun presentation. Giant millipedes, hissing cockroaches, amazing walking sticks, furry tarantulas, and more will amaze attendees and turn them on to the incredible world of arthropods. Beautiful butterflies and mysterious moths will also be displayed.

Why are lighthouses painted the way they are? What was life like for a lighthouse keeper? What are Fresnel lenses? Trish Chambers, author of the book “Lighthouses of the New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge”, will discuss these and many other interesting and historical facts about lighthouses, including some of the publically accessible ones along the Jersey Shore.

Lecture: Flappers: Women of the 1920’s
with Trish Chambers Productions
It was a period of American history that drove significant changes in how society perceived and accepted women. It was also a time of meteoric growth for our country and its women. This presentation discusses the emergence of American women from the demure Gibson Girl to the flashing Flapper. Also discussed are the impacts of WWI on society, the influences of literature, movies, and art on how women were perceived and the fashion of that time.
Not recommended for young children.
