Information Sessions on the Southern Pine Beetle August 16 and 18

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – South Jersey’s forests are in trouble – specifically, South Jersey’s pines. Southern pine beetle (SPB), a bark beetle smaller than a grain of rice, is killing pines across New Jersey’s southern forests. In 2010 alone, the beetle destroyed pines on 14,000 acres and continues to spread.
Rutgers Cooperative Extension and New Jersey State Forestry Services will be conducting both indoor and outdoor, on-site information sessions on southern pine beetle in New Jersey in several different locations across South Jersey during the month of August.
Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County will host a session on Tuesday, August 16th at 7 p.m. at its office located at 355 Courthouse-So Dennis Rd. in Cape May Court House. A field session will be held Thursday, August 18th, to see the beetle and the damage it causes. The field session will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Cape May County Rutgers Extension parking lot.
Anyone interested in learning about the southern pine beetle is invited to attend these information sessions to learn about the beetle’s history, lifecycle and current status in the state. Also, the discussions will include how to discourage the beetle from infesting forests, how to identify an infestation and effective suppression methods.
All sessions are free, but please register with the Cape May County Rutgers Extension office by August 16th for one or both sessions, call Jenny Carleo, 609-465-5115 Ext 607.
