COURT HOUSE – Zachary Hearon, 18, and a member of Troop 65 was presented with his Eagle Scout award and pin Sept. 30.
The Court of Honor was held in the Family Worship Center of the First United Methodist Church, which sponsors the troop.
Hearon, a scout since age 6, was inspired by his grandfather, also an Eagle Scout, to stay the path and work for the highest achievement possible in Boy Scouts. His grandfather was given the honor of presenting the award.
The celebration included speakers, commendations and special gifts presented to the new Eagle Scout.
The Cape May County Sheriff’s Office, represented by Undersheriff Robert Nolan, presented Hearon with a Rosewood collector’s knife and challenge coin.
The U.S. Marine Corps, representatives from Middle and Lower townships, along with state and county representatives also recognized Hearon.
Giving back to the community is a large part of being a Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, Hearon with the help of other scouts from Troop 65, constructed a handicap access ramp and brick walkway at The Museum of Cape May County. Nate Doughty from The Museum gave special thanks to Hearon for his work and dedication during the ceremony.
Hearon encouraged all boys to get involved with scouting. “It’s rewarding to help the community and gain friends through the Scouts,” he said.
Hearon plans to continue with scouts and someday to become a scout leader and sends words of encouragement to all scouts. “Don’t hide your uniform, be proud that you are a Scout, it is a high honor” exclaimed Hearon.
