Guest Speaker to Commemorate 150th Anniversary of Civil War

COURT HOUSE – An 1865 campaign of historic proportion during the American Civil War will be remembered April 16 at The Museum of Cape May County when Grant Gates, a ranger from the Petersburg, Va. National Military Park, presents a his lecture on the nine month siege that led to the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox.
“In keeping with our Round Table’s honoring the Siege of Petersburg, we’re going to have Grant Gates as our speaker,” said Marty Runner, president of Cape May County Civil War Round Table. According to Runner, the Siege of Petersburg took place from June, 1864 until March 25, 1865.
During his presentation Gates will address topics such as the siege’s beginning, fights over railroad lines, an underground tunnel dubbed “The Crater,” and the fall of Petersburg April 2, 1865.
“This siege was key in ending the war,” Runner said. “After it there was little for the southern army to do but admit defeat and surrender.” April 9, 1865, one week after the Siege of Petersburg ended, Lee conceded defeat and the Civil War was over.
Gates’ presentation is part of the April meeting of the Cape May County Civil War Round Table. The meeting is free and open to the public. It will take place at 7 p.m. at the Museum of Cape May County, 504 Route 9 North, Cape May Court House.
