Growing Sprouts 4-H Cloverbud Club

Growing Sprouts

By

Growing Sprouts is a 4-H Cloverbud Club for children in grades kindergarten through third. We meet at the Lower Township Library on the third Thursday during the months of September through June from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The purpose of the Cloverbud Club is to get the children prepared for the 4-H Program. We talk about the different clubs that are offered in the 4-H Program. Our club has six members, and unfortunately for us, we are losing two members as they will be moving up to a 4-H club this fall.
We were very busy this year talking about cooking, weather and planting seeds. We started the year off by getting to know one another. We each made a portrait and then went around the room telling everyone a little something about ourselves. This allowed us to discover similarities that we may have with other members in the club. Over the holidays, we made thankful head bands which told what we were thankful for in our lives. In December, we talked about traditions. The children played charades to explain what our family traditions are during the holidays, and then we made a tree ornament. In January, we talked about snow and made snowmen lanterns. In the spring, a member from the Masters Gardeners, Jerry McManus, talked to the children about planting tomato seeds. He had us plant tomato seeds, and then we transplanted a tomato plant into a cup to take home and watch it grow.
We had a very exciting year and we look forward to starting again in September. If you know of a child in kindergarten, first, second or third grade and they like to make crafts, bring them to one of our meetings at the Lower Township Library in the meeting room on the third Thursday of the month starting in September. I promise they will have a great time while learning about the 4-H program.
