For almost 15 years, the CMC 4-H Horse Council has had only one annual fundraiser, the annual golf tournament. It has been a very big success for our 4-H horse program for many years. The support from the community has always been so much more than we could have ever expected, and we have been truly grateful for all of the support.
For the last several years, the Horse Council has created a fund with the proceeds from the annual golf tournament to have the footing in the main riding ring rebuilt. We searched for a qualified construction organization to aid in the planning and construction of the new footing. We found Mitchell Nichols Enterprises, who has had experience in this kind of work for a few other horse farms in our area. We called upon Mr. Nichols’ expertise to help us figure out how to eliminate the flooding problems we were continually having in the ring. He suggested we elevate the rings subsoil grade and make it so that it was pitched, so when rainwater hit this extremely hard packed soil it would run off to the outskirts of the riding area. Then he suggested we apply a layer of sand so that the horses would have cushion while travelling around the ring. The sand would also act as a filter for the rainwater so that puddles would no longer form around the riding arena.
For the project, we needed to obtain 40 triaxle loads of the hard packing subsoil fill. The Cape May County Road Department graciously supplied almost half of this material and had it trucked to the fairgrounds for us. The rest of the soil was supplied by Mitchell Nichols Enterprises and was hauled to the fairgrounds by both Mitchell Nichols Enterprises and Jonathan Hand Excavating. The sand for the top layer was supplied and hauled by Mitchell Nichols Enterprises and Jonathan Hand Excavating as well.
The project started on May 23 and was completed on June 1. We are so pleased with the outcome of the project and hope you will come and join us at the 4-H Fair on July 21, 22 and 23 to see the result of all of the hard work everyone has put into making this project come to fruition!
We could not have done it without everyone’s hard work and generosity. We would like to thank everyone in Cape May County for your support, including the construction workers, the truck drivers, those who donated, those who attended our golf tournaments, and everyone else who helped in any way possible. We would also like to thank the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders and county employees who helped us dig out of the sand trap we were riding in for so many years!
THANK YOU!
Cape May County – I’d like to suggest to the Herald that they leverage spout offs draw and replace some of the ads for their paper with a few paid ads that you probably can charge a little extra for. Lots of people…
