Five From Area Named Billy Schoppy Award Finalists

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE — Four senior student-athletes from Middle Township and one from Wildwood Catholic are among the 12 girls and 12 boys who have been named finalists for the 17th Annual Billy Schoppy Awards as top senior athletes in the Cape-Atlantic League’s Class of 2017.
The Middle Township athletes are Matt Harris, Jenna Herlihy, Allison Hunter and Bridget Ruskey. The finalist from Wildwood Catholic is Caitlin McMullan.
The five have been invited to the 7th Annual CAL Celebration on Mon. from 4-6 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier.
The event was created by Prime Events with sponsorship from the City of Ocean City, Thomas Heist Insurance, the FMBA of Ocean City, Schoppy.com, the Ocean City Free Public Library, Gillian’s Wonderland Pier, the Ocean City Aquatic & Fitness Center and Voltaco’s.
The event will also feature a live broadcast on ESPN-FM of Mike Gill’s Sports Bash from the Music Pier, including interviews with some of the winners.
The Schoppy Awards originated as the Flagship Awards but, in 2012, Dave Talarico and the staff at Schoppy’s Inc. stepped in and assumed title sponsorship. Talarico has been involved in local sports for decades and he will be a major part of the presentations on stage. The awards were renamed this year in memory of Billy Schoppy, Talarico’s uncle and the son of William Schoppy, who founded the business.
Five athletes from Southern Cape May County have won the award in the past 16 years – Matt Szczur and Madie Gibson of Lower Cape May; Monica Johnson of Wildwood; Davon Edwards of Middle Township; and Tara Wuko of Wildwood Catholic.
More details about the awards, including winners in previous years, are available online at PrimeEvents.net.
