COURT HOUSE – Long before whalers and yeomen of European descent came to New Jersey’s lower cape peninsula, Native Americans lived on its sandy shores. April 23, Chief Robert Redfeather Stevenson will speak at the Museum of Cape May County to share the history of the Native American people who made their homes in what is now called Cape May County.
As a tribal legend keeper, Redfeather, of Townbank, has spent decades sharing the oral history of his tribe and Native American culture throughout the area. His tribal affiliation is with that of his mother, the Montaukett. His father’s people were Lenni Lenape.
Honored for his work in preserving the Native American history, Redfeather is holds his audience spellbound with stories that explain the history of Native Americans.
“In order to belong to a land,” stated Redfeather, “the roots of the tree of your life must grasp the rocks and soil.”
“The history of Native Americans here in Cape May County is a fascinating one,” said Museum Executive Director Donna Matalucci. “In speaking with Chief Redfeather, you can get a real feel for the culture of the people who lived here long before Europeans made their way to settle here.”
According to Redfeather, the history of Native Americans in Cape May County is a fascinating one that has never been explained.
“There are remnants of the Lenni Lenape people still here in the county today,” Redfeather, an octogenarian, said. “The Creator saw fit to leave some of us.”
Redfeather will deliver a one-hour fireside lecture on the history of Native Americans in the county followed by a question and answer period. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on the lawn of the Museum of Cape May County, 504 Route 9 North. Chairs will be provided, but participants may bring lawn chairs or blankets. In case of inclement weather, the presentation will take place indoors. The lecture is appropriate for all age groups.
