Lower Township Police Youth Camp To Be Held July 30-Aug. 3

By Press Release

ERMA – Lower Township Police Department is hosting a Lower Township Youth Camp for students who are entering sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The camp is set to begin July 30, and ends with a graduation and barbecue at the Cape May County Park Aug. 3.
The camp is designed to foster a positive and healthy interaction between police officers and youth. The young people attending the camp will be focusing on building self-esteem, teamwork, good decision making, communication skills and educational lessons focused on life skills.
The camp participants will experience various activities including (but not limited to) a day at Morey’s Piers, a four-hour saltwater fishing trip, a ride on the Silver Bullet speed boat, a behind the scenes tour of the Cape May County Zoo, participation in the Tree To Tree ropes and zip line course at the County Park and many police-type activities, including a trip to the Cape May County Police Academy to use the police simulator training room, SWAT and K-9 demonstrations, crime scene investigation techniques and a block of instruction on interactions with police called “Hand All Together.”
All participants for this year’s camp have already been chosen and were randomly selected after applying earlier this summer. The camp is a cooperative effort by Lower Township Police Department and Cape Assist, via their Lower Township Healthy Youth Coalition (LTHYC). The camp is primarily organized by the police department’s school resource officer, Patrolman Bill Barcas and Cape Assist’s Steve Selby, who is the coordinator of the township’s youth coalition.
