WHITESBORO — When they were students at Whitesboro Grammar School, pupils learned lessons, and teachers reinforced those studies with chalk on a blackboard.
Now, as schools have virtually eradicated blackboards made of slate material, the signing of a chalkboard by former students and teachers of the school was one of the highlights of a Fri., Sept. 3 ceremony that dedicated the schoolhouse on East Main Street.
Renovated with over $1.2 million in grant funding over a number of years, with much of the work done by Middle Township Public Works employees, the school is once again the center of activity with Cape Human Resources.
At the afternoon celebration, Rev. George Watkins offered the invocation.
Alive Roberson retold the history of the school, which served for decades as the focal point of the community.
Other speakers included Middle Township Mayor Susan DeLanzo, Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1st) Assemblyman Matthew Milam, Robert Jackson, president, Cape Human Resources.
Vera Smith, Commit members F. Nathan Doughty and Daniel Lockwood.
A plaque was presented to Bernie Blanks of the Concerned Citizens of Whitesboro, Inc.
A ribbon was ceremoniously cut, and then, former students and teachers once again picked up pieces of chalk and wrote their names on that vintage blackboard.
There are plans to preserve that board and those names for posterity.
