BURLEIGH — The Free Meal Center, 1206 Route 9, looked like a beehive on Saturday, April 24.
The center, formerly a restaurant, is being remodeled, and will become the county’s first free, volunteer meal center where the hungry will be fed, no questions asked. Due to delays in a number of areas, Douglas Jewell, founder, said it is likely the center may open in August.
Boy Scouts from Troop 79 of Upper Township pitched in to work on the exterior landscaping as part of an Eagle Scout project.
Members of the Cape May Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in Court House took part with others of their faith in the Cherry Hill Stake to do “a day of service, like those all over South Jersey,” who were doing community service in their localities, according to Branch President Matthew McCallum.
The interior was getting painted, and Jewell pointed out where existing walls, down to bare studs, are located in the dining room area will be removed, and support beams placed to allow a large dining area where formerly there were two smaller ones.
Bathroom remodeling is being done to accommodate those with handicaps, said Jewell.
“We have had over $30,000 in kitchen equipment donated,” he added.
To bolster the roster, 155 have added their names to help as volunteers once the center opens.
