COURT HOUSE – On March 23, 2011, Jennie Troxel reported for her usual Wednesday morning volunteer assignment at the South Lobby reception desk at Cape Regional Medical Center. What Jennie didn’t know was that her 96th birthday would be a day-long celebration that included homemade birthday cake accompanied by a chorus of “Happy Birthday,” countless well wishes, gifts, cards and hugs from staff, outpatients, and visitors alike!
A vacation to Cape May in 1940 provided more than just an opportunity to wade in the surf. For Jennie Troxel, it served as an impetus to make the move from Barren Hill, Pennsylvania (now Lafayette Hill) to South Jersey! In addition to raising her son, Henry, and enjoying her two grandsons, Jennie’s full life has included serving as a waitress, a hostess, a baker, a mechanic, and during World War II and through the 1950’s she was an entrepreneur and owner of the Villas Diner.
Jennie came to Cape Regional Medical Center as a volunteer in 1983 where she initially provided service in the Cheeri Corner Coffee Shop. After many years, she then began to diversify duties by volunteering in the Gift Shop where she provided service for nine years. Currently, you can find Jennie greeting our outpatients at the South Lobby reception desk. To date, Jennie has contributed nearly 8,300 hours of service to Cape Regional Medical Center.
“I am so blessed with so many friends through being a volunteer at Cape Regional Medical Center. I’ve been here for nearly 20 years,” states Ms. Troxel. “I volunteer two days a week for about nine hours; volunteering keeps me going.”
“Jennie Troxel is truly a treasure, and we are so grateful to have her as part of our hospital family,” offers Julie Paolella, Director of Volunteer Services.
In recent years, Jennie has been honored by the Cape May County Senior Corps/R.S.V.P. Program as their “Most Senior Volunteer”. One thing’s for sure: Jennie’s fine commitment to service at our Medical Center and her zest for life is truly “contagious”!
