Vet Who Lost Leg, Hip, Gets Lift on Trailer

By Jack Fichter

RIO GRANDE — The state Department of Social Services has installed a lift on the trailer of Jim Ernest, a Vietnam War era veteran who lost a leg and a hip to cancer, and was unable to get into his home following surgery and months of rehabilitation.
His trailer was too close to a neighboring mobile home to allow a ramp to be built. Ernest smiled from ear to ear while demonstrating the new lift for the Herald.
Ernest was featured in a Herald story last month. He told the Herald he has many people to thank for taking an interest in his situation including Ron Collins, VFW, DAV, broadcaster April Kauffman, Robert Progner of the Sea Crest Inn of Cape May, Seashore Community Church of the Nazarene, Mary Dozier of Social Services ” and all my veteran friends.”
Ernest said the Department of Veteran’s Affairs continues to fail to acknowledge his amputation or consider him for full disability. He claims it was due to the incompetence of a veterans hospital that caused him to lose his leg and hip.
Fox Chase Hospital has discovered spots on his lung X-rays, Ernest told the Herald. A fund has been set up: James P. Ernest Trust Fund, Sun National Bank, 3195 Route 9 South, Rio Grande, N.J. 08242
