STONE HARBOR – At the 15-mile marker, just east of Great Channel Bridge on Ocean Drive, a timer clicked seconds and minutes. The top of the bridge was shrouded in fog and drizzle March 30.
A few cars parked to watch and cheer Sea Isle City-bound runners in the 16th annual Ocean Drive Marathon that began at 9 a.m. in Cape May. The 26.2-mile, point-to-point course took the runners along barrier islands to the end point on Sea Isle City’s Promenade.
Through the gray fog, as if an illusion, atop of the bridge appeared three slow-moving vehicles, including a police vehicle with flashers activated, a car, and pickup truck with orange flashing light heralding the front-runner. Behind them came the runner, accompanied by a bicyclist.
Eric Bofinger of Langhorne, Pa. was that runner who crossed over the bridge in just over 1:30:05.
He went on to win first place, finishing the course in 2 hours, 39 minutes, 40.2 seconds.
Second runner after him crossed the same location at 1:35:33. Third runner followed in less than a minute.
Taking second place in Sea Isle City was Ryan Shanley of Brooklyn, N.Y., with a time of 2 ours, 49 minutes 35.4 seconds.
Third place went to Ben Hatt of Shillington, Pa., in 2 hours, 50 minutes, 10.1 seconds.
At 117th Street, a contingent of well-wishers, some with colorful umbrellas to fend off precipitation, cheered each runner or group as they turned east toward Second Avenue.
Proceeds of the event will benefit Volunteers in Medicine of Cape May County, Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey, Marine Mammal Stranding Center and high schools throughout the county.
