NORTH CAPE MAY — The 10th annual Coombs/Douglass Memorial Bay brought 325 runners to this community Sat. August 6, according to Lower Township Recreation Department, more than previously reported.
The five-mile race and two-mile health run/walk was held in memory of two Town Bank volunteer firefighters.
Gene Mitchell won first place 28:09, second place went to Mark Meller, 32:04 and Nathan Hall took third place with 32:35.
Robert Coombs was a family man who was killed in an automobile accident.
David C Douglass Sr. was a Lower Township police officer who was killed while protecting his community.
This event attracts both permanent residents of the community as well as seasonal residents and visitors.
Town Bank Fire Department was in charge of feeding the hungry runners. They prepared pancakes, eggs, sausage and other breakfast items. Much work went into preparing for the event by the fire department before the runners even arrived.
Along with breakfast there were free T-shirts, door prizes and trophies.
U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Company Juliet-185 attended as a united group and ran after the other runners began their race.
Lower Township Police Department assisted with traffic control and community relations.
Present were Lower Township Rescue with an ambulance on standby in event of emergency.
There were many trophies and awards presented in various categories.
Proceeds benefit Douglass Memorial Scholarship Fund and Special Olympics of South Jersey.
