ERMA – Hundreds of firefighters from throughout the county and region converged Nov. 29 to attend a memorial service for Arthur E. “Art” Treon, 62, who died Nov. 19 from complications following a Nov. 18 fire in North Wildwood that claimed a woman’s life. He was there as Cape May County fire coordinator.
Treon was remembered by numerous speakers during the noon ceremony at the Performing Arts Center at Lower Cape May Regional High School. In the front row to hear recollections was his wife Dora and sons Arthur and Brian.
In addition to other ceremonies, a Masonic funeral service was performed, as Treon was a member of Cape Island Masonic Lodge No. 30 Free and Accepted Masons.
His cremains were placed with honors in the columbarium at Cold Spring Presbyterian Cemetery.
Treon retired as a lieutenant from the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office where he rose through the ranks and held various positions (1982-2007).
After retirement, he began working for the Cape May County Office of Emergency Management and currently held the position of deputy coordinator.
He joined the Town Bank Volunteer Fire Company in 1975. He obtained his 10-year star and became a Town Bank Life Member in 1985.
He held the office of vice president; president; lieutenant; captain; deputy chief; finally taking the position of chief of the department from 1995-2009.
After respectfully stepping down as chief, Treon took over the role of training officer as well as one of their safety officers. He received various awards and commendations. Highly trained, he was a chief fire academy instructor for the Cape May County Fire Academy.
According to his obituary, Treon was a Green Bay Packers fan; enjoyed being on the road on his Harley motorcycle; and enjoyed the simple things in life, but most of all, he will be long-remembered and forever loved for being a devoted husband, a loving father and Poppy; and dear and true friend to so many.
