Surfers Catch Waves in Annual Nun’s Beach Invitational

By Al Campbell

STONE HARBOR — Praise the Lord and catch a wave! That’s what surfers ,young and old, did Sept. 14 in the ocean off Villa Maria by the Sea, 111th street.
Surf break wasn’t world-class, but they waxed up their boards and caught swells that they rode to shore, all to benefit the landmark retreat of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
As waves splashed ashore, the surfers kept their eyes on the next set of swells heading to shore, those on land helped raise fund for Villa Maria by selling pretzels, shirts and other goods, all as a way to say “thank you” to the order that allows surfers to use its beach.
