COURT HOUSE — A quarter century ago, Cape May County String Band started with just three members. Today the organization has 36 members who play their music around the county at various events.
The band recently gathered at Tuckahoe Inn to celebrate the success of those past 25 years. Founder George Magnavita and his wife, Jean, also president of the band, received accolades from a number of elected officials.
The band received a letter of congratulation from Gov. Chris Christie and U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-2nd).
Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1st) delivered a Joint Legislative Resolution on behalf o f the state Senate and General Assembly. He also gave the band a Joint Legislative Commendation signed by Van Drew and Assemblymen Nelson Albano and Matthew Milam.
Freeholder M. Susan Sheppard delivered a plaque from the Board of Chosen Freeholders, while Freeholder Di-rector Daniel Beyel offered his personal thanks at a freeholder meeting, and sent regrets on being unable to attend.
Freeholder Vice Director and Sea Isle City Mayor Leonard Desiderio also presented a plaque to the band.
Members of the band appreciated the expressions of gratitude, especially by those who attended.
The band will continue all concerts to nursing homes, senior complexes and other places so that shut-ins may enjoy their music at no cost.
Band members’ age averages 73, and the band is always seeking new members.
