STONE HARBOR – Stone Harbor announced the passing of Borough Councilman Albert Carusi on their website Dec. 8.
According to a release, Carusi passed away Dec. 8 at Cooper Medical Center in Camden following complications due to cardiac arrest.  Carusi was 74 years old.
“It is with extreme sadness that we must announce the passing of a true leader in our community,” stated Mayor Suzanne Walters in a release. “Our hearts are very heavy and we are filled with grief. Stone Harbor has lost a gentleman, a patriot, a neighbor, and an individual many people in our community have admired for many years.”
Carusi has served as a member of the Stone Harbor Borough Council since 2010 and was re-elected to his second four-year term in 2014.  He served as the Chairperson for both the Natural Resources Committee and the Public Safety Committee since 2012. Carusi also served as the Borough Council’s representative on the Stone Harbor Planning Board in 2010, 2011, and again in 2015.
“Al Carusi was extraordinarily dedicated to his community and was an admirable and honorable friend and colleague,” stated Stone Harbor Business Administrator Jill Gougher in a release. “Al was very passionate about veterans’ rights and affairs, and contributed greatly to American Legion Post #331 where he served as an active member, and past commander.”
Both Stone Harbor and Avalon are flying flags at half staff in honor of Carusi.  Funeral arrangements are pending.
Carusi’s term on Stone Harbor Borough Council lasts until Dec. 31, 2017.  Under New Jersey’s Municipal Vacancy Law, Borough Council has 30 days to appoint a successor or to leave the seat vacant until the next municipal election in November 2017.
