SWAINTON — An official naming and coming out for the Cape May County Zoo’s Snow Leopard Cubs will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Tue., Aug. 10, at the Cape May County Zoo.
Freeholder Director Daniel Beyel and Cape May County Zoo staff will officially name the two male Snow Leopards born at the Cape May County Zoo on May 10, 2010. The names being given to the cubs were selected from entries received from a contest sponsored by the Cape May Zoo Society.
The two cubs, born to Himani and Vijay, are the first Snow Leopard cubs ever born at the Cape May County Zoo and the first cubs for mommy ‘Himani’. Only eleven Snow Leopards were born and survived last year in the United States. With the two new cubs, the Cape May County Zoo is now home to four Snow Leopards.
All four are currently housed in the Snow Leopard yard as the Snow Leopard Exhibit was destroyed during the February snow storms. The Cape May County Zoo has plans to build a new exhibit with the support of the Cape May Zoo Society.
The Snow Leopards are just one species of the more than 250 species and over 500 animals that call the Cape May County Free Zoo home. The Zoo, located at 707 Route 9 North in Cape May Court House, is currently open from 10 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. The Zoo is open, weather permitting, 364 days a year – closed on Christmas Day.
