SWAINTON — It’s official, male snow leopard cubs born at Cape May County Park and Zoo have names: Kaba and Sabu.
The fuzzy felines, born May 11, received their names on Tue., Aug. 10 at a ceremony that honored an Ocean County girl who thought up the winning names.
Kellie Smith, 11, of Brick Township, had her names selected from 1,360 submissons in the naming contest.
William MacQueen, executive director of the Cape May County Zoological Society, said entries came from around the globe, including Brazil and Spain, as well as states from Florida to Alaska.
Contestants had to explain why they believed their submissions were appropriate.
The names are Tibetan, since that nation is where snow leopards are native. Sabu means snow leopard while Kaba means snow.
Smith received from freeholders gifts including stuffed animals, T-shirts and tickets to amusement parks in Sea Isle City and Wildwood.
The cubs weigh between 11 and 12 pounds.
