Season’s ‘On Track’ for Toy Train Operator

By Al Campbell

COLD SPRING — All aboard!
Bob Hiemenz can’t wait for the Christmas season so he can welcome the public to admire his Canal Toy Train display at 1013 Batts Lane, Cold Spring, south of Cape May Canal.
Hiemenz has opened the second floor of his garage to toy train lovers of all ages since 2001.
The wondrous collection includes villages and towns, even an amusement park and trains of O, S, and HO gauge.
There are hills and valleys, and urban centers all included in the 28 by 32-foot display that covers all four walls.
Hiemenz, 65, said he received his first American Flyer train when he was 8.
“I got it for Christmas,” he recalled. It wound it way around the family’s Christmas tree, and set Hiemenz on track for a lifelong hobby collecting trains.
There is no charge to admire the collection, which chugs around on shiny, tiny tracks.
The display is open weekends from noon to 4 p.m. ending Dec. 29-30.
