Republican Women Making History in Senate, Assembly and County and Local Races

Voters have an opportunity to make history at the polls on November 5, 2013. Republican Susan Adelizzi-Schmidt is the first woman to be nominated to run for State Senate by either party in District One. Her Assembly running mate, Kristine Gabor, is one of only handful of women ever to run for the Assembly here.
If elected on November 5th, Adelizzi-Schmidt and Gabor would be the first women ever to serve in the legislature from District One. Republicans have also nominated women to run in other races including Marie Hayes for Freeholder, Melanie Collins for Middle Township Committee and Jennifer Hand for Dennis Township Committee.
The move by Republicans to encourage female candidates started in 2010 when Freeholder Jerry Thornton and Mike Donohue successfully recruited Ocean City Council President Susan Sheppard to run in a contested primary for County Freeholder. Thornton and Sheppard won the primary and Donohue went on to become the County Republican Chairman. When Thornton and Sheppard won the General Election, Sheppard became only the second woman ever to serve on the Freeholder Board. Since 2010, Kristine Gabor was elected to the Freeholder Board and Hayes was appointed to the Board when Sheppard became the first woman ever to be elected to the Office of Cape May County Surrogate.
“We made a commitment to encourage and support female candidates,” said CapeGOP Chairman Mike Donohue. “I think we have successfully followed through on that. Our legislative team of Susan Adelizzi-Schmidt, Sam Fiocchi and Kristine Gabor includes two women. That, in and of itself, is historic. We are poised to elect the first woman to hold office in Dennis Township in years with Jennifer Hand on the ticket with Mayor Glembocki. And in Middle Township voters have an opportunity to elect the first African American woman to Township Committee with Melanie Collins on the ticket. The new CapeGOP is a big tent, as our diverse group of candidates shows. Voters want candidates who can think for themselves and show real leadership. Every one of these women do just that and are ready to represent the people from the State Senate to local seats. We look forward to a historic election night as Susan Adelizzi-Schmidt becomes a State Senator and Kristine Gabor heads to the Assembly with Sam Fiocchi. All the way down the column, we have great candidates who are going to make history as well. This year’s Republican Column is about diversity and offering voters candidates that represent a broader segment of the population. Good men and women have stepped up with the courage to put their names on the ballot and seek office to help people.
