CREST HAVEN – Open house at Cape May County Technical School was a two-hour brush with the future for hundreds of potential students, their parents and guardians Nov. 28.
Student representatives guarded unknowing parents to distant classroom and labs, exploratory areas and rooms filled with exotic creatures and fascinating scientific displays.
The annual event gave many their premier visit to the vast campus where a plethora of pupils gain knowledge in technical and academic areas of study.
For many it was their high school, or future high school, on exhibit. To others, adults seeking further knowledge in many non-credit areas, it was an opportunity to see where evenings may be spent spring and fall.
The adult high school and post-secondary area was responsible for 120 certificates issued last year, a sizable achievement for any educational facility. The school has long been the place where many got their GED (General Educational Development) certificate, some senior citizens who never had the opportunity to finish their high school years due to countless circumstances.
For many, the evening was good, but got even better once they stopped at the cafeteria to sample some Swedish meatballs and a pasta specialty, finished off with delicate dessert pastries.
For those who enjoy working with their hands, auto mechanics technology was the place to be. For those with a creative spirit, who like to work in metal, there was welding class, where delicate metal flowers were being crafted by students.
Throughout the evening, there was ample time to visit the exploratory classrooms where freshmen spend a great deal of time, in short intervals, getting a hands-on experience with every facet of instruction the school teach. Then, as they advance into their sophomore year, those pupils will focus on a specialty area that will afford them a skill or trade.
