WHITESBORO — Over 300 spent an evening with Stedman Graham, Friday, April 3 at Martin Luther King Community Center on West Main Street.
The native son, who returns home here frequently from his Chicago, Ill, home to see his mother and other family members, gave a motivational talk to the mixed crowd whose ages ranged from teen to senior citizens.
The event was a fund raising benefit for Family Promise and Caring for Kids.
After a meet and greet reception that started at 6 p.m., Graham shared his Nine Step Success Process that is designed to inspire listeners to maximize their potential through a better self-understanding.
He told the crowd that, when he first met Oprah Winfrey, she was not the world-famous television talk show host she has become. He urged listeners not to allow them to be put into classifications based on race, economic condition or their sex.
He said because of their newfound identity and understanding, they could be better equipped to create a new vision for their lives, career and education that will let them build on their strengths and passions.
“My intention is to help people, every day, to do something that is truly important in moving them toward their goals,” Graham said.
“You must choose to invest your time in the important steps. When you take charge of your time, you take charge of your life,” he said.
A book signing took place after the speech. It was a time that afforded the crowd to enjoy coffee and desserts as well as take part in the silent auction.
Family Promise is a hands-on interfaith housing organization that provides emergency housing and support for the county’s homeless children and families.
Caring for Kids, through education and partnership, seeks to engage the community and to empower parents in building healthy, loving, and productive families.
