NORTH WILDWOOD — The North Wildwood Beach Patrol hosted their second annual “Day at the Beach” July 23 with the 21 Down organization. 21 Down is a non-profit Down’s syndrome support organization serving the families, educators and healthcare professionals of Atlantic and Cape May counties. Approximately 25 children participated with their parents and families present.
NWBP “Day at the Beach” incorporates not only safe guarded play time for the children but also interactions with the seasoned lifeguards at the inlet beach. Beach safety is reinforced, with paddleboard rides a highlight, ocean fun, water balloons, lunch and beverages provided, and gift bags rewarded to conclude the day.
NWBP Lieutenant, Dave Lindsay stated, “seeing the kids smile when they get out of the water make this day fun for us too. We enjoy doing it.” Despite temperatures nearly 100 degrees, the day was a complete success.
NWBP and Chief Tony Cavalier recognize that the success of the event was impacted by the generosity of several local businesses. A special thanks is extended to Little Nicky’s for their donation of pizza pies, Russo’s for their hoagie tray, and Mr. McGarry for the refreshing ice cream treats. Also, Jack McCartney and staff at the North Wildwood Shirt Shop donated all event T-shirts.
Parent Lauren Johnson, states “we had so much fun last year that we reserved the day in advance, the lifeguards are so good with the children.”
President of 21 Down, Pam Ginet and North Wildwood Mayor William Henfey were present as the children played in the ocean, photos were taken and memories made. 21 Down stated that the ultimate goal is “for our children and families to be accepted within the community. We strive to have our children seen as caring and feeling individuals participating in school activities, work environments, and public outings. We want our families’ lives to be enriched with happiness and pleasant memories.”
