NEW YORK — Most of you know by now, Thursday was a very exciting day for me. I don’t get out often, so when I do, I try to make a big “splash”(using Cape May lingo here). My husband and I were invited to a meeting/get together/party with the Today show producers. A few celebrities stopped by as well. I have been dying to talk to you about who and what and when happened, but first I am a mom. I had to catch up with my boys before I squeezed out this post.
It was so inspiring. Maryanne Zoellner and Alicia Ybarbo (producers of the Today Show) are the authors of a new book entitled “Today’s Moms: Essentials for Surviving Baby’s First Year”. It is only $10.58. (I thought it was going to be this huge NYC price……so not true!!!) I was so honored to meet these authors/producers/moms. (Could they wear any more hats?) I can not tell you how in “awe” I was when I was invited to come. I knew I was going to be in the presence of true talent. The event was actually considered a book launch party. What an honor that they invited “little” me, (from little Cape May County) to be there.
Natellie Moralas, a Today Show Host, was also there to support her charity. We were asked to bring pampers for Babybuggy, a charity started by Jessica Seinfeld . An outreach to moms that need help. Using diapers as a tool to get new moms in for extra support, counseling, government funding ect. I was so excited to learn about this charity. (My hubby and I bought Pampers ahead of time but in a true, Elizabeth Norton, moment I left them in the van). Hubby saved the day (he always does) as I mingled and he brought diapers at a store down the street.
Sarah, Duchess of York AKA Fergie was on the invite list as well. (I am not talking about Fergie bustin’ a rap with the Black Eyed Peas) I am talking about a true princess, a mom, a person that has been through ridicule in the media, weight gain and loss. A mom that admits she is not perfect. It was the duchess, and she is a real woman. I never knew her, but we were so much on the same page. She made an inspiring speech about moms having a true critical job on their plate. We all need to embrace each other and STOP competing. Help each other out, lend a hand to a fellow mom. I was in awe and very touched.
I am a person who has a heart for foster system and moms that are hurting, needing help and struggling. The Duchess’s message is what glues me together at times. That hope that I can make a difference to a child, to a mom. (I gave the Duchess of York a hug) I, Elizabeth Norton, a stay at home mom was talking to Fergie about Motherhood Avenue, a local project, that I hope brings moms to Cape May County together. We talked about foster care reform and the power of social media. We were talking. (I am still not believing this.)
Natalie and the Duchess both had this message: When you are a mom we need to stop casting stones. Being a mom is a hard job. Why are we making it harder then it has to be. Stop the drama. Stop the mom games of competition.
I am happy to be a Today’s Mom. A today where I can be a mom in a social networking time when I can work from home. Today, a time when medical knowledge can help my son when he was first born and save his life. I am blessed to be a mom of today.
My wish for you is that you can agree. Agree, that we can support each other. Enjoy who we are. Recognizing our differences, but collaborating together to make Cape May County a place for us to be proud of. Backing each other, and standing by those moms that are struggling that need support. My challenge for you, is for you to be the mom you are designed to be, but help those that are designed a little differently. Don’t ridicule the difference, except it and offer to help.
If you are expecting a baby or know someone that is, “Today’s Moms: Essentials for Surviving Baby’s First Year” is getting great reviews.
