Missing Alzheimer’s Patient Found in Minutes by Sheriff’s Officers

By Herald Staff

RIO GRANDE — A 78-year old male Alzheimer’s patient was reported missing during a Thursday, Dec. 18 shopping trip with his wife here, at about 5:30 p.m. The patient, a Cape May County resident, has been enrolled in the Sheriff’s Office Project Lifesaver Program for over a year, and was wearing his locator bracelet at the time of his disappearance.
Middle Township Police notified the Sheriff’s Office and a specially trained Project Lifesaver team responded to the heavily congested scene in the area of the Shop Rite supermarket on Rio Grande Blvd.
Using the Project Lifesaver signal receiver the Sheriff’s Officers were able to locate the man within five minutes. He was found uninjured across Route 47, where he was being assisted by a local store employee.
The Cape May County Sheriff’s Office has participated in Project Lifesaver for over two years. This was the first time the department’s officers had to use their equipment and training to locate a missing client.
At present, there are 12 clients enrolled in the county. They range in age from 8 to 83, about equally divided between Alzheimer’s patients and children with autism.
For information about this program visit the Sheriff’s Office website (www.sheriff.co.cape-may.nj.us) or call the Sheriff’s Office at (609) 463-6430.
