COURT HOUSE – Alyssa Sullivan, the reigning Miss New Jersey Outstanding Teen, made Miss America Pageant history last week as the first person to open the restored event in Atlantic City. She was chosen to sing the National Anthem at Boardwalk Hall before the competition began.
The Middle Township High School senior has an even bigger goal for next year. She wants to return to the same stage, this time representing New Jersey as a Miss America contestant. She’s 17 now and will not be eligible to compete until she turns 18 on Dec. 29. Then she will begin the process in a preliminary contest at the Performing Arts Center of Middle Township where last year she began her successful quest for the Miss New Jersey Outstanding Teen title.
In addition to soloing at the Miss America competition, Sullivan also paraded and danced with other state teen winners in a parade showpiece for television and, afterward, joined the other Outstanding Teens to view the competition from the audience.
”It was exciting being up there on that stage,” recalled Sullivan. ‘Since I was very young I always yearned to be a Miss America contestant. Participating in the activities, especially on the stage where it was happening, increased my desire to be there next year.”
Sullivan, a National Honors Society student, is no stranger to big theatres and big audiences. In her junior year she sang in the “Broadway Rising Star” competition at New York’s famous Gershwin Theatre and finished fourth among young performers in her age group. “This was the event that shaped my ambition and led me on this path,” she said.
