VILLAS — Lower Township Council honored Mickey McPherson Monday for his 29 years of coaching Little League Baseball.
Mayor Walter Craig declared Aug. 12 Mickey McPherson Day in the township, which coincides with Little League awards day.
Craig, who also coached baseball, said he loved to play against Thompson and “loved to beat him and when he beat me, I thought, ‘Well I got beat by a good coach.’”
Craig said coaching a sport is a labor of love.
“I think Mickey had 30 years in love with baseball and in love with the kids that he coached,” said the mayor.
Councilman Thomas Conrad noted McPherson remembered the names of most of the kids he has coached.
“He taught them sportsmanship, he taught them how to play the game and showed how learning sports at that age teaches them life’s lessons,” he said.
“I did it for 29 years and loved every minute of it,” said McPherson. “It was as much for me as it was for them.”
He said he enjoyed all the kids he coached.
Councilman Glenn Douglass said McPherson coached his three sons.
“You have excelled with everything you have done with Little League,” he said.
Craig acknowledged McPherson was a lifetime township resident and drove a school bus for 20 years. He said McPherson coached the Rotary Club Little League team for the past three years, which finished this season with a 17-1 record.
McPherson received a long round of applause from the audience.
