Local World War II Veteran Named Volunteer of the Month

By Press Release

VILLAS – Tom Glynn, a Villas resident and local World War II Veteran, was recently honored at the Mid-Atlantic Center as the Arts & Humanities (MAC) Volunteer of the Month for May for his vital involvement on the Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower Advisory Board.
Glynn is one of survivors of the “The Exercise Tiger Disaster and Cover-up,” which was a top secret naval operation in 1944 that was preparing U.S. Army and Naval forces for the June 6th D-Day Invasion. A series of German torpedo boats discovered them and suddenly attacked, resulting in the death of more than 700 soldiers and sailors.
Glynn was the oldest of nine children and enlisted in the U.S. Navy when he was 17 years old, which required his parent’s signature.
A dedicated volunteer, Glynn shares his first hand accounts of the war with visitors to the World War II Lookout Tower, where he is stationed on several Saturdays during the year.
Besides volunteering at the World War II Lookout Tower, Glynn visits area schools as part of MAC’s Educational Outreach programs and speaks to several Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) groups.
Glynn is often accompanied by friend and fellow volunteer and World War II veteran, Joe Moke. The two are always willing to participate in programs whenever they can. “I enjoy talking to teachers so that they can pass along the history,” Glynn said. He also enjoys interacting with the public, is a proud Charter Member of the Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower, has been married for 64 years and will turn 85 in June.
The Volunteer of the Month award is given to a person who demonstrates a high degree of dedication, commitment and constancy to MAC’s volunteer program.
