COURT HOUSE — Students from Cape Christian Academy collected over $2,000 this year to assist children in Haiti.
Students competed each month to see which class could collect the most money. The winning class each month received a dress down day or ice cream party complements of the Parent-Teacher Fellowship.
The money went to New Missions in Haiti. New Missions operates 22 schools in Haiti bringing education and hope to more than 10,000 students who would otherwise be unable to afford education. Haiti is less than 700 miles off
the coast of Florida. It is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, and the third poorest country in the world. With a population of over 8.5 million people, more than 2 million children do not attend school.
Haiti’s illiteracy rate among adults is 47 percent. New Missions is helping to “build a new Haiti” in the wake of the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that hit in Jan. 12, 2010.
Students from Cape Christian Academy found other ways to make a difference in Haiti. The sixth grade class decided to hold bake sales and send the money raised on to Haiti.
The school also participated in a Christmas shoebox drive where shoe boxes were packed with gifts and needed items as a present to the children in Haiti. Some students even made handmade puppets for the children.
“We started working with New Missions at the beginning of the school year” said school Administrator John Spriggs. “The need became greater as we heard about the earthquake and the devastation that it caused. We are glad to be partners with New Missions and share God’s love with children in need.”
