Large Chunk of Fisherman’s Pay Returned

By Al Campbell

COLD SPRING – A week after commercial fisherman Matthew Camp lost his $12,000 pay from a trip, when his backpack zipper broke, the man who drove the silver Dodge pickup returned $5,300.
According to Tabitha Bohn, Camp’s girlfriend, on Sept. 16 she received a telephone call from “a weird number.” Because of that, she did not answer the call. A message left by the caller who indicated “he was the guy in the silver Dodge pickup who picked up the money,” Bohn said.
The caller stated he wished to remain anonymous, and wanted to return the money he found, and would call back at 7 p.m.
“I waited all day,” said Bohn. “He finally called back on Monday (Sept. 16) night. Matt was here, and last night (Sept. 18) Matt met with him, and he returned $5,300 of the $8,000,” she said.
The anonymous man said another car stopped at the cash windfall, and had picked up some of the lost money from the Garden State Parkway.
The caller said he saw the Herald’s story online and wanted to return the money.
Camp, who works aboard the F.V. Nancy Elizabeth out of Lund’s Fisheries, had just cashed a $12,000 paycheck, put the money in his backpack, and headed south on Garden State Parkway from Rio Grande on his motorcycle about 8 a.m. Sept. 9.
Unaware that the zipper broke, Camp left a trail of cash.
When he arrived at the dock, he realized what had happened. The father of four children retraced his southbound route from Exit 4.
Some New Jersey Turnpike Authority workers, on their routine roadside cleaning, had picked up about $4,000 of the cash, and immediately returned it to Camp. They told him that they witnessed two men in a Dodge pickup picking up much of the rest of the money.
Should the other finder wish to return the cash, about $2,700, they should contact Camp at (609) 536-0412 or Lower Township Police Department at 886-1619.
